The Price of Coffee

I read in the paper this morning - yes, some of us still read a newspaper - that a cold winter in Brazil may mean that coffee crops will less beans. That means the cost of your cup will go up; as if the cost of everything else wasn't going up.

I'm not sure what this will mean for coffee drinkers. I couldn't even tell you how much a cup of coffee costs, although I hear places like Starbucks charge too much. I don't know these things because I don't like coffee and don't buy it. If you come for dinner at my house it is a guarantee that you will not get a cup of coffee after your meal. It's not that I'm trying to be rude, I just never think that's something I should serve until it comes to that point in the meal.

The habits of coffee drinkers baffle and amuse me. Some that I know claim to love the taste of coffee, but I think that is societal pressure. People can't actually love something that tastes like what water would taste like it you could burn it.

I couldn't tell you a good cup of coffee from bad.

People go crazy if they don't have their coffee. I get that part, caffeine is highly addictive. You need your fix to get the day going. However, I drive by a Dutch Bros coffee place on the way home form work every night and there is a line of cars that spills out into the roadway. Isn't 5 p.m. a little late for a cup of coffee.

Coffee is so pervasive throughout the world that it is an expectation for companies to supply coffee to its employees. In our own office is one of those single-serve machines and numerous varieties of coffees available to everyone who wants it - all paid for by the company. However, if I get my caffeine fix from a energy drink, I not only have to pay for it myself, but I also get crap from coffee drinkers saying "that stuff is going to kill you." Kettle, I'd like you to meet pot.

I suppose I don't blame companies for providing coffee. I know when I was the top guy at an office, my edict that employees could pay for their own drinks was met with outright insurrection. It's just one of the costs of doing business, I guess.

I still don't get it, though. For the coffee lovers out there, God bless you for getting the boss to buy your fix for you every day.
